Canada passport photo requirements
A summary of the official Canada passport photo rules, with a link to the government source. Last reviewed: .
Official requirements (verified)
Source: Government of Canada — Passport photos. Rules change; the official page always takes priority over this summary.
- Size: 50 mm wide by 70 mm high (2 × 2¾ inches).
- Face height: 31 mm (1¼ in) to 36 mm (1⁷⁄₁₆ in) from chin to crown.
- Taken no more than 6 months before you submit your application.
- Colour or black and white.
- Professionally printed on plain, high-quality photographic paper.
- Plain white or light-coloured background.
- No sunglasses or tinted glasses.
Important: edited photos and background removal
The Government of Canada gives cutting and pasting your image against a white background as an example of an unacceptable change. Passport Room replaces backgrounds with AI, so for this application the safest route is to take a new photo against a plain background that already meets the rules, and use Passport Room only for checking the size and framing, or follow the official source above.
How Passport Room fits in (guidance)
The tool’s Canada preset renders 50 × 70 mm (591 × 827 pixels at 300 DPI). Canada also requires professional printing. Passport Room does not submit applications and cannot guarantee that any authority will accept a photo; acceptance is decided only by the issuing authority.
